SRPS "The Far North Explorer"

On Friday 22nd June 2007 and Saturday 23rd June 2007, The Scottish Railway Preservation Society Railtours ran a great tour with class 40, 40145, to the Far North of Scotland. This would be the first time a class 40 reached Wick. The train started at Linlithgow late on the Friday evening to travel up overnight through Fife, Perth and the Highland mainline to Inverness. The tour bypassed Inverness station on the Rose Street curve and headed to Dingwall where the track divides for either Kyle of Lochalsh or to Wick and Thurso. The tour took the latter along the shores of the Cromarty Firth through Alness and Invergordon to Tain. This is where the train now follows the Dornoch Firth heading inland towards Ardgay and then over the River Oykel on the impressive Shin Viaduct. After Lairg Summit (488ft), it's down hill to the North Sea coast via Rogart. Hogging the coast until Helmsdale the tour goes inland once more. Climbing into the moors of Caithness to reach Georgemas Junction where the tour reverses for the run to Britain's most Northerly station at Thurso. On the rear of the train is West Coast Railway Company's 57601 to provide power for the coaches and top 'n' tail engine for the trip to Thurso and Wick. This would also be the first visit for the class 57. The return working to Linlithgow is reached by the reverse of the outward route. This tour was run in conjunction with Beaver Sports and the Class Forty Preservation Society. Train operation and crew were supplied by West Coast Railway Company.

Pathfinder Railtours "The Orcadian"

On Friday the 8th of June 2007, Pathfinder Tours ran "The Orcadian" starting at Swindon for a four day land cruise to visit the Highlands of Scotland. We catch our first sight of the train at Perth, the gateway to the North. The tour heads to Inverness over the Highland mainline arriving in the late evening. Saturday was an afternoon journey along the scenic Kyle line to Kyle of Lochalsh and return. Sunday saw an early start for the trip to Thurso and Wick traversing over the Far North line. The final day was the return trip from Inverness to Swindon with our coverage finishing at Perth. The highlight of the tour for the railway enthusiast was the use of a pair class 37/4 locos and the chance to travel on lines that now only use DMUs for passengers. The class 37/4s were regular on passenger duties north of Inverness during the 1980s. English Welsh and Scottish Railways (EWS) only have a few examples left of a sub fleet that once contained 31 locos. The locos on this tour were 37406 "The Saltire Society" and 37410 "Aluminium 100".
