The Speyside Special and The Forth Circle 2

The Speyside Special
Saturday 26th June 2010

SRPS Railtours organised a chance to ride behind LNER K4, 61994 “The Great Marquess” between Perth and Broomhill on the Strathspey Railway. On early Saturday the tour started from Polmont with West Coast Railway’s class 47, 47760 hauling the stock to Perth. Upon arrival at Perth, diesel makes way for steam and K4 61994 with its support coach backs on to the train. Our next view is at Luncarty as the K4 powers away from the outskirts of Perth. The major climb on the route is to that of Druimauchdar Summit at 1484ft. This is also the highest point on Britain’s rail network. After a water stop at Dalwhinnie, it’s onwards to Aviemore and the start of the Strathspey Railway. Before heading to Broomhill the K4 is turned on the turntable at Aviemore in readiness for its return South. But first it works the tour tender leading up through Boat of Garten to Broomhill. We also get a chance to see the recently restored Caledonian Railways No.828 departing from Broomhill. The return trip is by the same route and the K4 takes it bow at Perth and 47760 takes over back to Polmont.

LNER K4, 61994 “The Great Marquess” was also the locomotive for the two SRPS Railtours which ran around the area of the River Forth. Early on Sunday morning we catch the stock approaching Linlithgow, having worked along from the Bo’ness and Kinneil Railway’s exchange sidings at Manuel. Linlithgow station was very busy with the first passengers about to travel behind the K4. The first run traversed the following route. Linlithgow, Winchburgh branch, Dalmeny, Inverkeithing, Dalgety Bay, Kirkcaldy, Glenrothes, Lochgelly, Dunfermline, Culross, Longannet, Alloa, Stirling, Falkirk Grahamston and Linlithgow. The second run started at Dalmeny and finished at Inverkeithing. For those who had booked to do both runs, they had the extra haulage on the section from Linlithgow to Dalmeny. Overall it was a fantastic day with some good weather and great steam action.

Running time 90 minutes. On screen captions. No commentary.
